co-anchor Bob Woodruff and a cameraman were seriously injured when
the Iraqi Army vehicle they were traveling in was attacked with an
explosive device. Both journalists suffered head injuries, and
Woodruff also has broken bones. They were in stable condition
following surgery at a U.S. military hospital in Iraq, and were
evacuated to medical facilities in Germany. |

NBC REPORTER DAVID BLOOM DIES IN IRAQ The 39-year-old reporter and anchor of the weekend "Today" program had been reporting from outside Baghdad and was packing gear when he suddenly collapsed, NBC said. He never regained consciousness and died after being airlifted to a field medical treatment center. He began his current assignment at "Today" in 2000. Colleagues remembered Bloom for his enthusiasm and his zest for competition. A native of Edina, Minn., Bloom is survived by his wife, Melanie, and three daughters. |

KILLED IN IRAQ
Washington Post columnist Michael Kelly was killed while on assignment with the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division as it moved toward Baghdad, Defense Department officials said. Kelly, who died in a Humvee accident along with a U.S. soldier, was covering the war in Iraq for The Post, where he wrote a weekly syndicated column, and The Atlantic Monthly, where he was an editor-at-large. Kelly, 46, was the first American journalist killed in action during the Iraq war. Kelly is survived by his wife, Madelyn, and two sons, Tom, 6, and Jack, 3. Kelly grew up in Washington, D.C., the son of Thomas Kelly, who was a reporter, and Marguerite Kelly, a syndicated columnist who writes about family issues. |

BAGHDAD - An American journalist and author was found dead after being shot three times in the chest in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, a U.S. embassy official said on Wednesday. Steven Vincent's death came four days after an opinion piece he wrote criticizing the rise of Shi'ite Islamist fundamentalism in Basra was published in The New York Times. The embassy official told Reuters his next of kin had been notified and an investigation was under way to determine who carried out the killing. |
